Lesson learned

I think one of the biggest things learned this year is that Honesty is the best policy. Things shouldn't be sugar coated or it may give someone false hope or false something.  Be a friend and speak the truth.  But never ever turn your back on the people in that situation.  You just may be their strength to keep them alive.
